Stephanie Gervasi, PhD – Manager of Data Science, Independence Blue Cross
Stephanie is Manager of Data Science at Independence Blue Cross. She earned a PhD in biological sciences from Oregon State University and a Master’s degree in Natural Resources from the University of Michigan. She has authored over 20 peer-reviewed publications and has spoken at national and international conferences. Through a variety of research collaborations, including partnerships between IBC and academic institutions such as MIT, Stephanie is working to reduce algorithmic bias and promote fairness in predictive analytics. Stephanie and the Data Science team at IBC support business stakeholders across the enterprise with analytics products to optimize business solutions and drive positive health outcomes. Before becoming Manager of Data Science, Stephanie was a Senior Research Scientist in Advanced Analytics at Independence.
Irene Chen is a PhD student in the Clinical Machine Learning group at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL), advised by David Sontag. In July 2023, she will become an assistant professor at UC Berkeley and UCSF's Computational Precision Health program. Her work centers on machine learning methods for improving clinical care and making it more equitable, as well as auditing and addressing bias in algorithmic models. Her work has been published in machine learning conferences (NeurIPS, AAAI) and medical journals (Nature Medicine, Lancet Digital Health), and has been covered by media outlets including MIT Tech Review, NPR/WGBH, and Stat News. She has been named a Rising Star in EECS by University of California Berkeley, Harvard, and University of Maryland. Prior to her PhD, Irene received her AB/SM from Harvard and worked at Dropbox.
Jaya Aysola MD, MPH is the founder and Executive Director of Penn Medicine’s Center for Health Equity Advancement and Assistant Dean of Inclusion and Diversity at Perelman School of Medicine. An Assistant Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics, her research centers on evaluating system, provider, and patient level strategies to improve the uptake and quality of health care and health for historically marginalized populations and stems from her prior clinical, administrative, and policy experiences in resource constrained settings. Her work has led to publications in New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA Network, and Health Affairs.
Prior to coming to Penn, Dr. Aysola has had extensive education and experience in anthropology, public health, and health services research and spent significant time in Cambodia, Thailand, India, and Post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans developing and implementing care delivery models in resource constrained settings. Dr. Aysola received a Bachelors of Science from University of Michigan, with high distinction in Anthropology and Zoology, her MD from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and is board certified in Internal Medicine and Pediatric. She received her diplomate from the London School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, her Master of Public Health in Health Care Policy and Management from the Harvard School of Public Health and completed her two-year general medicine research fellowship at the Department of Health Care Policy, Harvard Medical School.
Ryan Wesley Brown is an attorney practicing in the area of Health Law at Duane Morris LLP. He counsels hospitals, pharmacies, and other health care facilities and providers on regulatory matters including reimbursement, privacy, licensure, and fraud and abuse. He represents clients in administrative appeals, including substantial work in the area of Medicaid Disproportionate Share Hospital (DSH) payments. Mr. Brown has also advised healthcare clients on transactional matters, including mergers and acquisitions and complex changes of ownership. At Duane Morris, Mr. Brown is a member of the Hiring Committee, Inclusion Committee, and DM Pride, the Firm’s LGBTQ affinity group. Mr. Brown is a graduate of Vanderbilt University Law School, where he was conventions editor of the Vanderbilt Law Review, and a magna cum laude graduate of Muhlenberg College.
Seun Ross, DNP, MS, CRNP-F, NP-C and Executive Director, Health Equity, Independence Blue Cross
Seun O. Ross, Ph.D., is Independence Blue Cross’ first-ever Executive Director of Health Equity. In this role, she is leading the development and implementation strategies and interventions to ensure equitable whole person health across Independence. Prior to joining Independence, Dr. Ross served as chief nursing officer and senior vice president of Managed Service Provider Operations at InGenesis Inc. In that role, she was responsible for more than 200 employees as well as strategic planning, performance excellence/quality, and executive oversight of health care programs. Dr. Ross also had leadership positions at the American Nurses Association, AL Health Services, MedStar Harbor Hospital, and the United States Naval Academy-Brigade Medical Unit. Dr. Ross is a licensed registered nurse and a nationally certified family nurse practitioner. She earned a dual bachelor’s degree in Nursing and Psychology and a master’s degree in Nursing from Coppin State University, as well as a doctorate in Nursing Practice from Chatham University. Dr. Ross is the chair of the American Healthcare Standards Institute and a delegate for the International Standards Organization, Technical Committee for Healthcare Administration. She received the Coppin State University College of Health Professions Health Care Award.
